New year, new updates as Ford would say for its steadily improving daily driver, the 2021 EcoSport. The EcoSport is Ford’s method of providing a crossover SUV that’s affordable and offers a helpful list of modern safety & technology features. The mix between new interior features and reliable engineering makes the EcoSport a top choice.

Engine & Performance

Ford offers two different engines with the EcoSport this year, a 123-hp turbocharged three-cylinder or the optional 166-hp four-cylinder. Both engines share an efficient and reliable six-speed automatic transmission. While acceleration lacked at times when needing to hit the gas suddenly, the EcoSport still managed to feel quick and peppy when driving. The three-cylinder engine is capable of towing up to 1,400lbs. For those who need a little more towing power, the four-cylinder engine adds 600lb towing capabilities, totaling to 2,000lbs.

What is easily one of the most exciting features of the 2021 Ecosport is Ford’s newest feature they are calling “Intelligent 4WD.” This interesting addition allows the Ecosport to take advantage of detailed and helpful data like the wheel speed, steering wheel angle, accelerator pedal position, and the current type of environment the vehicle is driving on to offer advanced AWD driving assistance during times that you need better traction and power. Ford even implemented a non-roll hill feature that works with the braking system to hold the vehicle in place for up to two seconds while you transition your foot from the brake to the accelerator.

Fuel Economy & Pricing

The EPA estimates the standard three-cylinder engine provides up to 27 mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway. It beats many of the competition in terms of making trips to the local gas station. On the other hand, the four-cylinder engine is expected to provide up to 23 mpg city and 29 on the highway. However, what we found interesting was the fact that the four-cylinder engine actually tends to perform better with overall mpg during real-world tests. During our test, we observed 30 mpg with the four-cylinder, and only 28mpg with the three-cylinder.

Driving Safety Updates

Ford offers a multitude of available and standard safety features. These features are one of the biggest attractive points for the 2021 Eco. A large list of features including interior airbags, ABS braking, electronic stability control, and hill start assist fill the EcoSport. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and 180-degree parking sensors are also available. The 2021 EcoSport earned a four-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), however it hasn’t been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). More information will be released on the NHTSA’s rating soon.

Interior Technology & Entertainment

Ranging from entertainment inclusions to performance luxury additions, the 2021 EcoSport has it all. Available features like the power moonroof, ambient lighting, and an 8-inch LCD touchscreen with Sync 3 Apple Carplay & Android Auto compatibility help turn a daily commute into a vacation getaway. A 3-month trial subscription is even included for all models so you get all the entertainment needs including ad-free music, plus a variety of news and sports channels. For those who have kids, the Ford MyKey feature helps a ton for parents who want to encourage their teenagers to drive more responsibly. You have the option to program your key to a restricted driving setting that can mandate and monitor safety belt use, limiting top speed and decreasing audio volume.

Our Final Thought

The 2021 Ford EcoSport performs well against other subcompact crossovers, especially in the areas of technology and cost. Many crossovers start at a minimum of $25,000, or more. Price is what makes SUVs and the like a difficult market to get into for people on a budget. But Ford’s newest model starts at a low cost of $21,240, thousands of dollars below the industry standard. The addition of eco-friendly technology features and simple controls make the Eco a strong competitor for those who want all the standard features of 2021 without breaking the bank.
