Ford has unveiled the seventh generation of its iconic Mustang muscle car, featuring a refreshed yet familiar design, upgraded chassis components, a brand-new interior, and two enhanced powertrain options. Although the 2024 Ford Mustang is well-prepared for the future with its array of improvements, the outlook for its nearest rivals, the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, appears less promising after the unveiling of the 2024 Mustang.

2024 Ford Mustang Overview

The updated Mustang introduces much-needed improvements, particularly in style and powertrain options. Both Mustang GT and EcoBoost models now offer an optional Performance Pack, including a front strut-tower brace, Torsen limited-slip differential, wider wheels and tires, larger Brembo brakes, and a MagneRide active-damping suspension. Performance enthusiasts can also opt for Recaro seats, an active exhaust, and a Performance Electronic Parking Brake for easier drifting. Ford has also introduced the new Mustang Dark Horse, a track-ready model with a powerful 500-hp Coyote V-8 engine and performance enhancements sourced from the Ford Performance parts catalog.

Engine

The new Mustang features a standard upgraded 315-hp 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with 350 pound-feet of torque, providing 5 more horsepower than the previous model. However, it falls slightly short of the last-gen EcoBoost Performance’s 330-hp. The EcoBoost Mustang comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the Mustang GT, still equipped with a 5.0-liter V-8, offers a standard six-speed manual. The new Coyote V-8 in the GT delivers 480 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, an improvement over the previous generation. Steering feel and feedback have notably improved. Ford offers an optional performance exhaust that boosts output to 486 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque.

Top Speeds

At Car and Driver’s test track, the Mustang GT with the performance exhaust hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, while the EcoBoost model achieved it in 4.5 seconds. The MagnaRide dampers provide a smooth ride, absorbing road imperfections. The all-new Mustang Dark Horse, based on the GT, boasts a 500-hp 5.0-liter V-8, akin to the previous-generation Mach 1. Equipped with a six-speed manual Tremec TR-3160 transmission, the Dark Horse reached 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, 100 mph in 9.7 seconds, and covered a quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 115 mph. The Dark Horse comes standard with 19-inch Pirelli P Zero PZ4s, and an optional Handling package with Pirelli Trofeo RS tires promises even better performance, though specific test results are pending. Now, this is what we call fast and furious!

MPG

The EPA rates the four-cylinder Mustang at 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. With the optional Performance Package, fuel efficiency drops slightly to 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The V-8-powered last-gen Mustang achieved 15 mpg city and 24 mpg highway (automatic), and the same holds for today’s model. The Mustang GT with a six-speed manual gets 14 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse is less fuel-efficient, with 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. During a 75-mph highway test, a GT model with a six-speed manual achieved 24 mpg.

Interior

Sitting in the 2024 Mustang, you’ll notice a meticulously crafted interior design, described by Ford as “fighter-jet inspired.” Surprisingly, it’s comfortable, with supportive seats. The standard 12.4-inch instrument cluster is a significant improvement over the previous model, offering customizable displays with various colors, gauges, and a simplified “calm” mode for essential information. Ambient lighting and the driver’s display adapt to your selected drive mode. Base Mustangs feature cloth seats with optional micro-suede vinyl inserts, while the Premium trim adds stitched details throughout the interior. The Mustang GT includes leather inserts. Ford has introduced a Remote Rev function, allowing you to rev the engine with a key fob click while savoring the sound from outside the car.

Safety Features

The 2024 Ford Mustang offers extensive driver-assistance technology, surpassing its pony car competitors, enhancing both speed and safety. Every Mustang comes equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360. Additionally, key safety features include standard adaptive cruise control, standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and optional active pothole mitigation.

Price Of The 2024 Ford Mustang

The 2024 Mustang offers a base four-cylinder EcoBoost and a V-8 GT model. We recommend the V-8 GT with a six-speed manual. While the GT coupe is pricier by over $10,000 than the base four-cylinder, you can add the GT Performance package for an extra $5,000, which includes performance upgrades and aesthetic enhancements.

The 2024 Mustang lineup has a strong but average warranty. This includes: Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles, Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles. However, maintenance packages vary by dealership!
