The EcoBoost Mustang comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the Mustang GT, still equipped with a 5.0-liter V-8, offers a standard six-speed manual. The new Coyote V-8 in the GT delivers 480 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, an improvement over the previous generation. Steering feel and feedback have notably improved. Ford offers an optional performance exhaust that boosts output to 486 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque.

Top Speeds

At Car and Driver’s test track, the Mustang GT with the performance exhaust hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, while the EcoBoost model achieved it in 4.5 seconds. The MagnaRide dampers provide a smooth ride, absorbing road imperfections. The all-new Mustang Dark Horse, based on the GT, boasts a 500-hp 5.0-liter V-8, akin to the previous-generation Mach 1. Equipped with a six-speed manual Tremec TR-3160 transmission, the Dark Horse reached 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, 100 mph in 9.7 seconds, and covered a quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 115 mph. The Dark Horse comes standard with 19-inch Pirelli P Zero PZ4s, and an optional Handling package with Pirelli Trofeo RS tires promises even better performance, though specific test results are pending. Now, this is what we call fast and furious!

The EPA rates the four-cylinder Mustang at 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. With the optional Performance Package, fuel efficiency drops slightly to 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The V-8-powered last-gen Mustang achieved 15 mpg city and 24 mpg highway (automatic), and the same holds for today’s model. The Mustang GT with a six-speed manual gets 14 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse is less fuel-efficient, with 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. During a 75-mph highway test, a GT model with a six-speed manual achieved 24 mpg.
